Working on his memoir From The Left to the Right, Mark realized how many of his parents' teachings involved their politics and a selfless empathy for the average person. He found his father's life and personal stories riveting and therefore often urged his father to write a book about his experiences. Instead, Mark's dad vocalized in minute detail about his life and infused his deepest political insights and personal feelings into Mark's mind. His dad told Mark that earlier in his life he had been a "card-carrying member of the Communist Party." However, rather than indoctrinating him, Mark's father emphasized he think for himself.
This manuscript contrasts Mark's and his father's lives, showing the differences between the two time periods and reasons for their differing, but reasonable political views. The author cites personal experiences, historical examples, and samples of bias he's observed in journalism. He reveals how his political and ideological journey, from the left to the right, relates to all of us today. Mark recognized his transformational story was for a larger audience than his own family.
Mark credits the Castle Rock Writers, under the leadership of Alice Aldridge-Dennis, with helping him improve and inject strength into his writing. Powerful critique sessions and a willingness to listen and learn helped him land a book agent! He hopes From the Left to the Right will be published before the next election cycle.
